I hope someone out there can help me. I have oracle installed on our
intranet server. I have a windows xp pro computer in an office that I
need to give some limited connectivity to. Basically it should be
able to log in and perform basic sql queries, nothing fancy.

I know the program contains a client that you can install on each
machine. The main problem is the people who installed oracle (not me)
lost the media. Hence my problem...

Does anyone use any other client tools that are available for
download, preferably free. I tried parusing the web but I only come up
with tons of ms/mysql clients but I don't see any for oracle p/sql.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dear Gehan Gehale,

Have you tried the Oracle website?

Their you can download a couple of tools like an Oracle tool.

For us to help you, we need to know the version of Oracle software on
the intranet server.

Kind regards,

There are too many possibilities to list here so I'll focus on the easy ones
because you implied that you had a need for only a minimal client:

First, Oracle has something called an Instant Client that you can download
for free http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html.
The site says:

"Instant Client allows you to run your applications without installing the
standard Oracle client or having an ORACLE_HOME. OCI, OCCI, Pro*C, ODBC, and
JDBC applications work without modification, while using significantly less
disk space than before. Even SQL*Plus can be used with Instant Client. No
recompile, no hassle"

Oracle provides more stuff; you just need to look around their website.

Then there are a number of open source JAVA clients which is what I would
use. http://java-source.net/open-source/sql-clients. I've used the
SQuirreL SQL Client before and it is decent. However to use these you need
to install JAVA and the Oracle JDBC drivers.

Gehan,
If you don't already have a login, sign up for the Oracle Technology
Network (http://www.oracle.com/technology/index.html). It's free, and
is the site for Oracle downloads. You should be able to find an Oracle
client download there.

Also, though this is more on the fancy side, you might want to try
DBVisualizer (www.minq.se). It's a pretty good tool for simple query
and data access. There is a free personal-use version, as well as a
for-cost advanced version.

Also, on the free side, you might want to try Oracle's SQLDeveloper
(http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html).
It is 100% free and has similar functionality to DBVisualizer.

Enjoy!
