Oggetto: [HP3000-L] SYSTEM HALT 7

Yesterday I powered up my 917LX after about 10 months and got this message:

SYSTEM ABORT 1327 FROM SUBSYSTEM 110
SECONDARY STATUS: INFO = -1013, SUBSYSTEM = 110
SYSTEM HALT 7, $052F

The errors displayed at the bottom of the console are:
FLT DEAD, BF07, 0105, 022F

I did a little research and found out that this has something to do with the system clock, so I rebooted and ran CLKUTIL, which showed the message:

error: bad status returned from pdc read.

So I set the clock to the current date and time, and got the message "clock set!", but a subsequent read shows that the clock is not set, and the same "bad status" message as above is displayed.

Before the machine was powered off it was running perfectly.

How can I fix this?

Thanks

Harmik

Thanks for the reply.

Once the machine is powered up, isn't the clock powered by the mains
anyway?
I thought the CMOS battery was for maintaining the memory only when
the machine is powered off.

Thanks

I did a little research and found out that this has something to do with the
but a subsequent read shows that the clock is not set,
Was that subsequent read after a power cycle, or during the same power-up in
which you set the clock (with clkutil)?

The 9x7 has a Dallas Semiconductor RTC (Real Time Clock) chip (DS1287)
with a built-in (and now-dead) battery :(

I'd love to find the HP engineer who did such a crappy design of the
backplane and his/her manager who approved the design ... there was no excuse
for it even back then.
(BTW, the 9x8 solves the problem by using a replaceable battery.)

The chip is on the backplane, soldered in. (Did I remember to thank the
crappy engineer, or the manager who said "solder it, don't use a socket"?)

A simple google search for DS1287 shows that replacement chips are available,
and that some people have figured out ways to wire in a battery .... note that
those people were NOT working on a 3000, but (generally) on PCs of some kind.
I'm not sure how much clearance/room one has for adding a battery to the DS1287
inside a 9x7!

In short, I think that if you can get the system booted (by using clkutil
first, then booting and re-setting time at the main time prompt), you'll have
to live with that.

Even shorter: buying a used 9x8 3000 is probably a cheaper, faster, and better
solution.
